About Saint Laurent
Yves Saint-Laurent, one of the most influential fashion designers of the twentieth century, was a visionary and a fashion revolutionary. He’s credited with redefining haute couture in the 1960s and his innovative designs achieved that rare blend of elegance and comfort.
His astonishing imagination and ability to interpret bold ideas led to the creation of many timeless classics, including the women’s trouser suit and the safari jacket – both instantly-recognisable fashion staples to this day.
After moving to Paris at the age of 17 to study fashion design at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, Saint-Laurent was mentored by the great Christian Dior. ‘He taught me the basis of my art’, he would later recall. By the age of 21 he was Head Designer at House of Dior and his spring 1958 collection was a huge success.
He’d later set up his own independent fashion house, and go on to create a series of era-defining designs. His famous ‘le smoking’ tuxedo suit for women was one of the most talked about styles of the last century and changed the fashion industry forever. He popularised the broad shouldered, padded style that characterised the 1980s.
